Theo Vickers is an award-winning underwater photographer and marine biologist from the Isle of Wight. Theo works to raise awareness of marine natural history in the seas of the Isle of Wight and Solent, using underwater photography to promote the wildlife and habitats of our wild seas, and to support the marine conservation community.

Cruise with a catshark through a Cornish kelp forest 🦈 Small-spotted catsharks (also known as dogfish) are one of the most abundant small sharks in British seas, patrolling our kelp forests and seagrass meadows for prey! In early summer many females will begin to lay their eggcases at nursery sites in the shallows, wrapping them around tough seaweeds! A young female small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) on the kelp reefs of Falmouth Bay a few weeks back with @giosdiving and @seawithme__ 🦈 Britain’s most abundant inshore shark, this was surprisingly the first time I’ve seen this species in Falmouth, mainly spotting larger nursehounds instead. Flowering seagrass on my first island seagrass snorkel of the year this week at Bembridge Ledges 🌱 Seed and reproductive shoot development is well underway and a sure sign that marine summer is on its way in the island’s Solent waters! Take a (not so deep) dive into Falmouth’s rockpools in the Spring sun and meet some of the locals who call the lush algae gardens and rocky pools of the intertidal zone home! From hermit crabs and anemones to nursehound eggcases and cushion stars, Cornwall’s rockpools are alive with marine wildlife! The inshore migration of spider crabs (Maja brachydactyla) has definitely begun along the south coast, and Falmouth’s kelp forests are heaving with them as they march inshore to mate and moult 🦀! A successful mission yesterday with @seawithme__ to photograph sea hares (Aplysia punctuata) on the rocky shore! Like many marine gastropods spring is a great time to see them as they begin to mate and spawn in the warming waters, laying pink spaghetti-like egg masses!
